Our chic pink slip-ons are inspired by the native Indian horse, the Marwari. Originally ‘The Warhorse of India’ they are intelligent, loyal and much admired for their beautiful curved ears.
The origins of the Marwari horse are intertwined with the Rathores, a warrior clan of Rajputs. Legend has is it the Rathores were exiled from their homeland in the 12th century and settled in Marwar an area of Rajasthan, where the native Marwari horses became an essential part of their survival. These majestic horses suited to the dessert terrain with their thick eyelashes and enhanced hearing, bravely carried their warrior masters into battle. The fearless Marwari was said to only leave the battlefield in victory or to take their injured masters home.
When the British colonials ruled India in the 1800s they brought with them and used their own Thoroughbred horses. Post Independence from British Raj, many of the estates of ruling Kings were taken over by the Indian government and the once much admired Marwari no longer having people able to properly care for them, faced extinction. In recent decades the Marwari is again being recognised for its beauty and loyalty and now survives as ‘The Desert Horse of India’.
