Meet the founders – we caught up with HEMYCA London founders, Helen and Myra for a quick chat about their brand, inspirations and journey so far.
How did HEMYCA London begin?
“Helen and I were both studying at the London College of Fashion and shared a devotion to the art of luxury fashion design. After university, we were both working in the industry and wanted to create luxury fashion that was accessible and offered bespoke to a wider audience. Helen and I have always had a close-to-identical mindset and style, so we wanted to create and build a brand that resembled everything that we love about fashion.”
Have you always wanted to work in fashion?
“Yes! Myra and I both studied at London College of Fashion and then went on to work in the industry with brands such as Calvin Klein and Roland Mouret before deciding to start our own company. My family worked in Savile Row and Myra’s family owned an Atelier in Italy, so I think that fashion has always been a tradition passed down through our families generations.”
What has been your journey so far?
“Over the last 10 years, HEMYCA has evolved and grown in the industry – we have had the opportunity to work with some amazing people and our garments have been shown in the pages of Vogue Italia, Elle and Marie Claire. We have dressed international celebrities, worked with some amazing charities and received many achievements.”
What has been the highest and lowest point in your journey?
“The highest point in the journey of HEMYCA was when we met the Queen of Fashion, Anna Wintour and Queen Elizabeth II, we had the chance to show them our collections. Both were wonderful, encouraging and told us to keep going. Anna Wintour said that we were doing an amazing job and that we had to keep pushing in this industry. To hear those words of motivation from such an iconic person in fashion was amazing. Lowest points come with the challenge of building a business in an ever changing market but we are so lucky to have a great team and of course be a duo!”
What inspires you?
“Women. All female icons throughout history, their achievements, their personalities…We always keep this in mind when we are designing so you could say that we are celebrating women through our feminine style. Just the fact of being a woman and being able to wear what makes us feel great, regardless of shape, size, background, is really important for us and we wish to celebrate this.”
What inspired your latest collection?
“Our latest collection was inspired by the idea of action and growth. We used a combination of geometric elements and cut-out shapes to create playful and powerful figure sculpting dresses. We used a bold, tropical colour palette that echoes the essence of Jacques Marjorelle’s garden.”
How do you cope with setbacks?
“In such a fast-moving industry it is inevitable that setbacks will occur, and things don’t always go to plan. Throughout our time in the industry Myra and I have experienced all sorts of setbacks and with this experience we’ve found ways to manage these situations. One of
the most important things is to stay calm and organised and to believe in yourself, your vision and surround yourself with good people!”
Is there anyone you would like to see wearing your brand?
“Helen and I would love to see our clothes being worn by strong and empowering women across the globe. We adore Amal Clooney”
Where do you see your brand in 5 years?
“We would love to keep creating exciting and innovative collections that continue to empower women and push the boundaries in fashion. We have a lot of exciting changes within the business right now including our first diffusion and accessories line”
If you could wear one piece from your collection, which one would that be?
“That’s a very hard question, but right now I would have to say the Lena dress. It’s timeless, sophisticated and comes in a variety of materials and colours.”
What is the best piece of advice you were ever given?
“Don’t give up – Deborah Meaden”
Tell us something random about yourself?
“We have the same tattoo but on different hands”
What is the one thing you cannot live without?
“Our twin cats!!”
